Four bob shapes to know

• Blunt bob: one length with a straight edge. It looks sharp and works strongest on straight, healthy hair.
• A-line bob: shorter at the back and longer at the front, creating a slanted line toward the chin.
• Soft or textured bob: the ends are point-cut for a lighter, less severe edge.
• Long bob: falls to the collarbone. It is the easiest first step if you are afraid of cutting too much.

Is a bob right for your hair

A bob suits many hair types, but it behaves differently on each one. Straight hair shows every line, so a clean cut looks elegant. Wavy hair expands sideways, so the stylist may leave it slightly longer or add inner texture. Very thick hair can form a triangle, which a good cut avoids by removing weight inside.

If your hair has a strong cowlick at the nape, a very short back may stand out. Raise this before the cut. The stylist can then adjust the line.

How a bob is cut

The stylist starts at the nape, sets the length there, and then works upward in sections. Everything is checked against that first line. The head position matters, so the stylist keeps your chin level and checks from the front.

For an A-line shape, the front sections are left longer and the angle is built gradually. Because the cut is precise, you may be asked to stay still and look straight ahead. This is normal. A bob finished in one length can look uneven if the head was tilted during cutting, so the final check happens with hair dry.

Photos, length and your face

Bring a front and side photo, plus a back view. Then choose the length on yourself: point to the jaw, the chin or the neck. A difference of two centimeters can change a bob from rounded to sharp.

Precision cuts like a bob reward careful planning. A Director-level cut is reasonable when the line must be exact or when you are making a large change from long hair. Designer level suits a refresh of an existing bob. Both levels cut the same hair, but the planning and the time may differ, so ask the stylist how they approach the cut.

Keeping a bob sharp

A bob loses its line faster than most cuts, often within four to six weeks. That is a general estimate. The back grows into the collar, and the edge stops sitting evenly. If you love the shape, plan a small trim when you pass through Seoul again.
